If you have a missing or damaged tooth, a crown may be your best option to restore the integrity of your mouth. We can help you and walk you through the entire process, start to finish.
What is a Crown?
A dental crown is made of porcelain, porcelain metal fusion, or gold and covers the surface of badly damaged teeth or teeth with large fillings or that required a root canal. It is custom made to fit your tooth and bite pattern and allows you to keep your natural tooth intact while adding a layer of protection to eliminate the concern of further damage to the area over time.
Different materials also offer different benefits. For example, porcelain gives your smile a natural look but can be susceptible to damage, so is often reserved for front teeth. Porcelain and metal combined form a natural looking, but more durable construct. Even if the porcelain were to chip, the metal part would still be intact to protect the tooth. Finally, the gold option binds the best with your tooth, which makes it the most durable for your back teeth where they cannot be seen and take the brunt of the force when eating.

Why Would I Get One?
We may recommend that you get a crown for any number of reasons. Most commonly, crowns go hand in hand with large fillings or root canal procedures, along with deep decay. They can restore the strength of your teeth and protect against problems reoccurring in the future. Crowns can also be used to support and repair broken or fractured teeth, where it could be broken more if left untreated. Finally, crowns can cosmetically enhance your smile if a tooth stood out or just looked out of place with your smile.
What is the Procedure?
Getting a crown is a pretty simple procedure with several benefits to enjoy. When you come in to get your procedure done, be it a root canal, filling, or just simply to get a crown over a broken tooth, you will first be given a local anesthetic to eliminate any potential discomfort. During this visit, the tooth will be cleaned, and any decay will be removed. Then we will shape your tooth to fit a crown. We will take an impression of your teeth and then give you a temporary crown. We will send your impression to a lab where we can make a custom fit crown just for you. This will be ready in 1-2 weeks, and you will return where we can make final adjustments and cement the crown in place.
Edge Dental knows that a broken or damaged tooth can be potentially stressful if you do not know where to turn. Thankfully, we are more than happy to help and can get you feeling like your old self in no time, quickly and comfortably. Give us a call today!
