How to Get Past Your Fears of Root Canals

Posted on 9/20/2018 by Dr. Justin Lai
How to Get Past Your Fears of Root CanalsRoot canals are one of the most commonly feared dental procedures because they're so misunderstood. Unfortunately, this procedure is sometimes unavoidable. For this reason, you'll want to find ways to move past your fear.

Start by Understanding What a Root Canal Is

A root canal is necessary when the pulp inside your tooth becomes infected. In this procedure, we will replace this infected pulp with an inert material (a natural type of latex). All of this is done while you're under local anesthetic. This procedure is not painful. In fact, any pain you feel is caused by the infection itself, not the root canal procedure.

Listen to Some Music Throughout the Procedure

Studies show that music has a way of soothing anxious nerves. During a root canal though it won't only calm your nerves, but it will also help to drown out some of the noises that occur throughout the dental procedure itself.

These are noises that would otherwise contribute to you feeling even more emotional discomfort. It doesn't matter what type of music you choose to listen to when you're having a root canal done. In fact, the 'right' type of music will vary based on your personality. The point is, you should find some music you like and listen to it as we perform this procedure in your mouth.

Talk to Us About the Procedure

One of the best ways to reduce your anxiety is simply by talking to us about them before your appointment. You'll find that we're very supportive and compassionate when it comes to your dental care. You're not the first person who's been afraid to get a root canal and you certainly won't be the last.

We understand this and so we go out of our way to create a calm, safe atmosphere for you. So, stop putting off your root canal and instead, give us a call and schedule yours today.
