Does Aspirin Damage Your Teeth?

Posted on 5/13/2018 by Dr. Justin Lai
Aspirin Edge Dental TX 77079It is something that people have used to describe a doctor's order for many years. Take two aspirin and call me in the morning are words that most people have heard in their life.

Aspirin is an over the counter medication that serves many purposes. Many people as they are older are told to take a baby aspirin once a day. Before doing that, it is important to learn how the use of aspirin could cause problems for the teeth.

How Teeth Damage Occurs

People have used aspirin for many years without realizing the possibility that it could damage their teeth. One of the reasons they don't know about this is because most take aspirin by swallowing it with a glass of water. Teeth are not damaged in this way with aspirin. The danger is when people change the way they take aspirin.

Chewing aspirin can turn into a problem for the teeth. There are studies that show chewing aspirin can lead to erosion of the teeth. The studies look at the long-term impact of people who take aspirin regularly and that chew the aspirin. The erosion of the surface of the teeth can lead to problems with tooth decay, cavities and gum disease.

The answer to the question of whether aspirin can damage the teeth is yes, no and maybe. It depends on many factors, including the strength of the aspirin, how much aspiring a person uses, the way they use it and their overall oral hygiene habits.

Aspirin helps many people with a variety of different conditions, but it is not always worth sacrificing a problem with the teeth for helping something else. Learning more about aspirin and the effect they have on the teeth is something to ask a dental professional.

If you use aspirin regularly or if you have other questions about your teeth, contact the dental professionals at our office. We will help you get the answers you need to the questions you have.
