Do Natural Sugars Hurt Your Teeth As Much?

Posted on 3/25/2018 by Dr. Justin Lai
Sugars Edge Dental TX 77079There are a lot of debates as to whether or not natural sugars are as problematic for your teeth as refined sugars. It is hard to keep your teeth free of cavities while also getting the nutrients you need when some of those nutrients come from the foods we want to eat.

However, if the foods are sweet, such as fruits, you have to decide if you want to eat them or not, based on the risk how much sugar they contain naturally. The good news is that if you eat fruits, they can work with your teeth without causing extra problems, so long as you eat them properly.

How to Eat Natural Sugars So They Do Not Damage Your Teeth

The foods you eat that contain sugar do the most damage when you eat them on their own. It leaves your mouth battling the sugar on its own. However, if you eat something sweet as part of a larger meal, you can get the benefits without as many of the problems.

This means if you want the nutrients of say, a peach, without the sugar causing as much damage, eat it alongside your lunch or as a sweet bit between bites of your dinner. This way, you get the nutritional benefit without the sugar lingering on your teeth for hours before your next meal.

Sugar, even from natural sources, can cause trouble for your teeth. However, if you allow your sugars to be consumed along with bigger meals, the impact they have on your teeth goes down.

If you want other tips on how to include some safe, natural sugars in your diet without the cavity problems that come with it, give us a call. We can discuss this with you during your next exam.
