Posted on 1/10/2018 by Dr. Justin Lai
aste Buds Swell Up Edge Dental TX 77079Have you ever noticed that randomly your tongue hurts a little, and you look and see a few random taste buds swollen on your tongue? It is pretty common. After all, you have approximately 10,000 taste buds in your mouth.

For a handful of them to be off now and again, it should be expected. If you are not sure why they may swell, here are a few ideas. Most of them are absolutely nothing to worry about.

Reasons A Few Taste Buds Might Swell Up

The most common reason you may have a few taste buds swell up is because they got irritated. This could be that you scraped a taste bud across your teeth when chewing, you have a sharp chip on a tooth that rubbed against a few taste buds, or even something you ate. Acidic foods and extremely warm or cold foods can also irritate your taste buds.

Acid reflux or really bad heartburn can also cause problems with swollen taste buds. Each of these issues can be managed, but until you get them under control, you may notice issues like this regularly.

Occasionally a few taste buds may swell in response to an infection in or near your mouth. This is rare, but it does happen. If you suspect an infection, come in and see us.

Food allergies can also cause parts of your mouth to swell, including your taste buds. If you ate something you may have, or know you have, an allergy to and you notice taste buds starting to swell, call our office or seek medical attention.

Most of the reasons your taste buds may swell are benign and nothing you need to worry about. However, the occasional problem would require treatment. Come in and see us if your taste buds are giving you trouble.
