How Your Toothbrush Needs Change As You Age

Posted on 8/30/2016 by Dr. Justin Lai
A young boy brushing his teeth. As we age, we change. Physically, our hair gets lighter, our skin looser and our bodies more frail. Mentally our mind becomes hazy and things that once mattered most to us do not matter at all anymore.

Just like our bodies and our minds change, so too does our teeth and oral health needs. As we get older wear and tear can wreak havoc on our teeth.

Our gums become more sensitive and chronic illnesses can also take a toll on our mouths. As we grow older and change our teeth change also, and therefore require different treatment.

Different Age Teeth Need Different Brushes

Children's toothbrushes differ from that of an adult tooth brush. The bristles are often much softer and often lack contouring. As we get older though, and we lose our baby teeth, we need to keep up with the needs of our teeth and change our toothbrush.

When you are no longer a child, you can go up to medium strength bristles, but should not use hard bristles as they can wear the enamel on your teeth down. When you cross over into the latter years of life it becomes necessary to again utilize a softer bristled brush because your gums will likely be more sensitive and teeth more worn.

If you suffer from sensitive teeth, it is important that you nurture this condition. Be kind to your smile. Take care of it. You can purchase specific toothpastes that can help to block the nerve endings in worn down teeth or teeth that are suffering from enamel erosion.

Contact our office today about ways that you can take care of your smile as you age and recommendations as to what type of toothbrush is best for you and your unique oral health needs.
