Can My Medication Hurt My Teeth?

A collection of medications inside a doctors hands.There are several medications, both legal and illegal drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements that can have negative effects on your teeth.

Be sure to tell your dentist about any and all products you are taking, even if you feel there should be no correlation, you may be surprised. Some of the products you are ingesting may be for one ailment but the side effects of it may have damaging results in other ways.

What are some of the known medications that can hurt my teeth?


The information presented here is not a complete list, you should consult with our dentist for more through information. Some of the larger known products that can have dire results for your teeth include:

•  Heart medications generally include a blood thinner. This can cause abnormal bleeding following a dental procedure including surgery and periodontal treatment.
•  Some medications can cause damage to your soft tissue, resulting in sores. Medications known for this include oral contraceptive, heart medication and chemotherapy medications.
•  Anti-seizure medication can lead to enlarged gums. Patients with enlarged gums will need to take special care to clean and disinfect their gums.
•  There are many medications associated with causing your saliva glands to not produce as they should, causing a condition called dry mouth. Medications including decongestants, heart medication, antihistamines, muscle relaxants, medications for Parkinson's, AIDS, and Chemotherapy, are all associated with dry mouth problems.
•  Anti-inflammatory, Respiratory Inhalants and Smoking cessation products including Nicotine Patches can alter the way you taste. These products often leave a metallic taste in patient's mouths.
